Tips & Trivia for the Season
FALL CARROTS
South Georgia gardeners can direct-seed carrots in the garden until the end of November, say experts with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. In north Georgia, though, you'll have to wait until spring.

FEED CARROTS
Give fall carrots light feedings throughout the winter, say experts with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. Apply only 0.5 pounds per 100 square feet of 13-0-44 at any one feeding.

GIFTS FOR THE GARDENER
If you’re searching for that perfect holiday gift for your favorite gardener, why not pick from this list: heirloom seeds, gardening books, garden tools, a garden scooter or a load of compost.

POINSETTIA FLOWERS ARE YELLOW
The bright red color of traditional poinsettias actually is the plant’s bract, a leaflike part of the plant below the flower or flower cluster. In most plants, the flowers are brightly colored and the bracts are green.

SWEET CARROTS
Growing carrots in the winter produces an added bonus: It enhances the flavor, say experts with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. The warm days and cool nights so typical of south Georgia in the winter are ideal to develop a really sweet carrot.
