UGA to dedicate Vince Dooley Athletic Complex
The University of Georgia will dedicate the Vince Dooley Athletic Complex, Saturday, Nov. 29 at 9:30 a.m., before UGA’s football game with Georgia Tech. The ceremony will be held in the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, 1 Selig Circle, and will be followed by a ribbon cutting for the complex and unveiling of a statue depicting a victorious Dooley being hoisted on the shoulders of players from his 1980 national championship team.

UGA undergraduate researchers reap the benefits of CURO Apprentice Program
Every Monday afternoon, a group of University of Georgia freshmen and sophomores gather to discuss the latest trends in research pedagogy or listen to guest lecturers about their academic interests. These seminars are part of the support network that the Honors Program’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities provides the participants in its Apprentice Program.

UGA opens office to support science, math and engineering education in Georgia
Experts have for some years worried that a national shortage of scientists, mathematicians and engineers has jeopardized the competitive edge the United States must have in an increasingly technological world. To address this need, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents launched an initiative called Math + Science = Success.

68th Annual Peabody Awards issues call for entries
The George Foster Peabody Awards’ 68th annual search for excellence in electronic media has begun. More than 100,000 call for entries alerts have been mailed worldwide, supplemented by ads in media-industry publications. Original broadcast, cablecast and webcast programs presented in the calendar year 2008 are eligible. The entry deadline is January 15. Entrants may apply online at www.peabody.uga.edu.

Faculty and staff at the University of Georgia are invited to attend one of three public forums to be held in November to learn about and provide input on a Student Learning Initiative to be developed and funded as the university seeks reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students and alumni are also being contacted in a variety of ways to solicit their ideas.

UGA one of two universities awarded for green cleaning practices
The University of Georgia has become one of only two universities in the country to earn the Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) Certification with Honors. The University received the award for the Physical Plant Building Services Department’s work in the 28 buildings on North Campus which comprise UGA’s new “Green Corridor.” The University of Michigan is the other school which has obtained this distinction from the International Sanitary Supply Association.
